March Scripture: Proverbs 16:33

Hello everyone! Happy March! I hope the month has been good for you so far!

Since March 17th is St. Patrick’s Day, I decided to do my March verse on a phrase we often hear around that holiday: good luck. Is there really any such thing as good luck? What does the Bible say about “luck”?

Proverbs 16:33, in the NLT version, says, “We may throw the dice, but the LORD determines how they fall.

This verse tells me that nothing good happens to us just by coincidence. Another verse says that every good and perfect gift comes from the Father above (James 1:17).

So if every good and perfect gift comes from above, and the Lord determines the outcome even of dice in a game, then instead of crediting our fortune to “good luck” we should give the glory to God. He works all things for the good of those who love Him (Rom 8:28).

We should tell people about the wonderful things the Lord has done for us, rather than boasting about our “good luck”. Multiple times in Scripture, people who received miracles from God did this, and many marveled at it and some even came to Christ because of the reports (Mark 5:19; Luke 8:39; John 4:29). Imagine what a witness we could be for Christ if we did this more often?

And finally, we should remember to thank Him in all things, knowing that He is great and greatly to be praised. We should do as the Psalmist said in Psalms 9:1, “I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.
