Inspiration for a Wintery Story

I’m back with the fourth and last of my four Inspiration for a Seasonal Story posts, with this one obviously being on a wintery story! Lots of things can give off the vibes of a wintery story, and I hope to provide you with some inspiration today if your story just so happens to be set in winter or give off wintery vibes!

Winter in Writing

Wintery books in my eyes typically give off some sort of wintery vibe–think of books where Christmas plays a major part, or the setting is primarily snow and ice. The beauty of wintery books is that they can give the vibes of a cozy read, of snuggling in a blanket around a fire with hot chocolate to read a sweet Christmas romance, or also an on-the-edge-of-your-seat story in a cold, icy fantasy world.

Two genres often remind me of winter. Obviously Christmas stories, especially contemporary ones, remind me of winter, and really many cozy romances in general. But I also really think of fantasy when it comes to wintery books. Some fantasy characters have ice-powers, and some just live in a world of eternal winter, but winter does play a large part in lots of fantasy novels.

Winter Read

For some reason, the book Sir Knight of the Splendid Way gives me wintery vibes–maybe because I read it in winter. It’s a wonderful fantasy allegory, similar to The Pilgrim’s Progress, but with knights, and it is really a wonderful, cozy read while still being convicting and encouraging for Christians.

Winter Movie

This one was an easy one! The Lion, the Witch, and The Wardrobe. How could I not mention this awesome movie, where winter (an eternal winter) plays such a major part in the setting and plot! And even Christmas is in the movie! This is a must watch in winter, and frankly, throughout the rest of the year too!

Winter Song

Not counting all the obvious Christmas carols, the song I feel works well for a wintery mood is This Quiet Violence by David Chappell. It’s such a bitter and quiet instrumental, which feels like it could play during a quiet winter day when the snow is softly falling, and everything sounds muffled and cold.

Wintery Collages

Now for some wintery collages! For the first, we have a collage of some wintery settings

And then some wintery aesthetics with people.

And finally, as always, a couple collages with possible wintery male and female character faceclaims.

And that is it for my compilation of wintery things to give you inspiration! What do you think of when you think of winter? What is your favorite Christmas carol? What wintery-type books or movies do you know of? What is your wintery story about? Let me know in the comments below! ~ Kay Adelin

    1. That totally makes sense! I like snow for a little bit but by March I’m ready for spring usually 😝 and yes, Christmas is awesome 🤩
